SIGNIFICANT DATES IN SABAH MUSEUM HISTORY

15 July 1990
Sabah Museum Silver Jubilee celebration and the official opening of traditional houses at Sabah Museum Complex.

July 1990
The building of the traditional Bajau House was completed.

August 1990
Officials from the Sabah Forestry Development Authority ( SAFODA ) discovered the remains of the Kinarut Rumah Besar.

December 1990
The building of the traditional Tambunan Bamboo House was completed.

30 January 1992
The Sabah Museum compound was gazetted as Sabah Museum reserved land.

1 August 1992
The Department of Sabah Museum and The Department of Sabah State Archives, which were merged into one department earlier under the name The Department of Sabah Museum and State Archives, were split into separate institutions.

9 December 1992
The Sabah Museum site was declared as a historical site.

1993
The Tham Kung Temple was gazetted as a historical monumen.

December 1993
The building of the traditional Lotud House and Chinese Farm House was completed.

22 August 1994
The compound of the Kinarut Mansion ruins which measures up to 7 hectares wasgazetted by the Sabah State Government as a historical site.

September 1994
Datuk Jamdin Buyong was appointed as Director of The Department of Sabah Museum replacing Ms. Patricia Regis.

11 January 1995
Royal visit by the KDYMM Sultanah Kedah, Tuanku Hajah Bahiyah Binti Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman to Sabah Museum.

28 March 1995
The name ' Traditional Houses ' has been changed to ' Heritage Village '. Three more traditional houses, namely the traditional Bisaya House, the Brunei House and the Chinese Farm House, were officially opened today.

22 April 1995
The Kinarut ' Mansion ' was opened to the public.

June 1995
The building of the traditional Bisaya House and Brunei House was completed.

13 July 1995
The setting up of the ' Islamic Civilisation ' Gallery was completed at Level 5 of the Sabah Museum Main Building.

1995
Sabah Museum received the biggest number of visitors, i.e. 340,567 visitors, compared to the previous ten years.

September 1995
The building of the traditional Iranun House was completed.

1996
The construction work of the Sabah Islamic Civilisation Museum began.

23 January 1996
The "Khazanah" magazine was launched by the then Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Sabah, Datuk Wilfred Bumburing.

23 January 1996
The " Baju Kebal ", believed to have been worn by Datuk Paduka Mat Salleh during the colonisation period, was exhibited at the Sabah Museum gallery.

2 April 1996
The Contemporary Collection Unit was moved to the Science and Technology Division.

May 1996
Two wooden coffins from Agop Miasias Darat was moved to the Agop Batu Tulug Museum, Kinabatangan to be exhibited.

6 July 1996
The Agop Batu Tulug Museum, Batu Puteh, Kinabatangan was officially launched by the then Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Mr. Surady Kayong, representing its then Minister, Datuk Wilfred Bumburing.

25 November 1996
The Islamic Civilisation Unit was upgraded to Islamic Civilisation Division.

11 December 1996
The construction of the 3-storey Observation Tower at Tingkayu archaeological site, Kunak was completed.

1997
Sabah Museum won First Place in the Landscape Competition for the Sabah Government Buildings category.

6 January 1997
Mr. Mohd. Yunus Hj. Awang Hashim was appointed as Director of the Department of Sabah Museum replacing Datuk Jamdin Buyong.

1997
The Sports Unit was created and later placed under the Museum Security Management Division.

18 May 1997
Sabah Museum, for the first time, took part in the sports competitions of the Museums in Malaysia in conjunction with the International Museum Day National Level celebration in Kuala Lumpur.

6 July 1997
The Agop Batu Tulug Museum was officially launched by the then Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Mr. Surady Kayong.

19 February 1998
Ms. Noni J. Said was appointed as Director of The Department of Sabah Museum replacing Mr. Mohd. Yunus Hj. Awang Hashim.

22 June 1998
The Department of Sabah Museum was placed under the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Development which was later renamed to Ministry of Culture, Environment and Tourism.

1999
The Heritage Village Division was created.

27 January 1999
Mr. Joseph Pounis Guntavid was appointed as Director of the Department of Sabah Museum replacing Ms. Noni J. Said.

March 1999
The Department of Sabah Museum was placed under the Ministry of Youth Development, Culture and Sports Sabah.

28 April 1999
The Information and Public Relations Division was created.

20 September 1999
The Mat Salleh Memorial at Kg. Tibabar, Tambunan was officially declared open by the then Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Sabah, Datuk Rubin Balang.

14 December 1999
Ground breaking ceremony in conjunction with the Kota Kinabalu Centennial Time Capsule campaign by the then Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Osu Sukam.

1 May 2000
The Sabah Fest celebration was launched by His Excellency the Sabah Head of State at the Heritage Village compound.

15 July 2000
Sabah Museum celebrated the 35th. Museum Day.
